While living a life that most of us can only dream, Jennifer Meranto captures the vibrancy of the Caribbean islands in her hand-colored photographs. In addition to being objects of great beauty, her pictures honor the spirit of the people and places that make up this unique chain of island nations. Her images included in the popular Yellow Boat Series and others (including a new black and white series of manipulated images) are spontaneous shots of people and the natural environment taken during her travels around the lush tropical isles.
According to Meranto, the images were initially shot in black and white and later transformed by a laborious fusion of alternative processes including bleaching, toning and careful hand coloring. Even her latest black and white photographic prints reflect her well-defined artistic sensibilities.
Meranto is intent upon exploring the combination of old and new photographic techniques to achieve a look which reflects the unique character of the islands, a world which is light filled, color saturated, and at the same time, worn and weathered. Even her handfabricated frames are color-matched to the artwork and given an added patina for a more-finished look befitting the subject matter.
